Box of Goodies Print E-mail
Classic Mini Project
Tuesday, 01 December 2009
After moving the Morris to the garage, the previous owner continued to provide spare parts. I brought home a cardboard box, a huge tube from the "Publicity Despatch Department" of British Leyland, a grille, and 2 of the 4 new wheels.

The box was full of assorted parts. I decided to dive into it and catalog each box or bag as best as I could. I had already started a writer's notebook and a file folder for all the minutiae I would collect over the life of the project; receipts, stories, photos, etc.

The 10x5 allow wheels will be a great addition to the vehicle, when it's time. One of the rims was shod with a studded snow-tire, which coincided with an e-mail from an old family friend about ice-racing his Mini in the '60s with studs. "We beat every one on a close course and it was a blast to drive in blizzards. You would enter a corner as fast as you could go, turn the wheel, and apply the handbrake (rear tires only), the rear would slide and the front would grab, making an almost 90 degree turn with no loss of speed! Those were fun times."

The brake master cylinders (2), wheel cylinders and timing chain will all go to good use as the Traveller is brought back to life. Each part was added to my catalog for future reference.

The cardboard tube looked as if it was packed in the British Leyland offices and never unpacked on this side of the pond. I'm not ready to dig into that. Is it a piece of automotive history that should remain untouched, or should I tear through the contents?

The grille, albeit an Austin grille, will help fill the void below the bonnet. Maybe it will boost my mood toward the car each time I enter the garage.
